A Day in the life of Mackoy Site Manager Sam Bowers

03 September 2018

He’s only been with us a short time but already Sam Bowers has made a big impression. As a site Manager for Mackoy, Sam oversees groundworks progress on our client’s builds day-to-day. Ensuring the high health and safety standards we work to are always met. And acting as a liaison between our client’s own site staff and our Mackoy groundworks team.

In fact, Sam’s made such a positive start since joining us eight months ago he even won our Site Manager of the Month Award in March. Not bad for his first year on the job!

Sam’s role at Mackoy is one of many we fulfil on our client’s sites at Mackoy. And for any development, with lots of plant, people, and moving parts, a Site Manager is key to keeping things ticking over and everything running smoothly – as it should. It’s why we entrust this greatest of responsibilities to people like Sam at Mackoy.

Here’s a bit more about Sam’s job on the ground, and what interests him when he isn’t wearing his Site Manager’s [hard] hat…

What does being a Site Manager for Mackoy involve exactly?

Lots of things! The management of labour, machinery, and ordering materials, to setting out on site and quality control of the work being undertaken by our Mackoy groundworks team. I’m also responsible for checking and reviewing drawings as well as working out levels. So there’s a lot to keep me busy!

What are you working on at the moment?

Currently I’m the Site Manager for the North Stoneham Park development of 120 houses in Eastleigh, Hampshire, for the Highwood Group. It’s a £5 million contract for Mackoy and we’re responsible for the full groundworks infrastructure for the entire development, so it’s a big job. This week I’m working across multiple areas of the site, including the finishing’s in areas 3B1 and 3B2, as well as the foundations in 3B7, and oversites in 3B5/3B6.

What’s been your proudest achievement at Mackoy to date?

Well for sure a highlight has been winning Mackoy’s Site Manager of the Month award earlier this year. Having only been in the job a short time it came as a complete shock. But I’m happy to know that the work I’m doing at North Stoneham Park is recognised and appreciated. I’m also proud of the consistently high health and safety scores we’ve been able to achieve on site month on month in Mackoy’s SHEQ inspections.

What’s the best advice anyone’s ever given you?

Ha! There are a few good pieces of advice I actually take on board and try to live by both in my job and in life in general…

  1. If life gives you lemons make lemonade
  2. Man up, rub some dirt on it and carry on!
  3. There’s never a problem – only solutions.

Tell us something about you that people may not know…

My parents had me when they were both only 15 years old and are still together now.

What matters most to you in life?

Family and friends
