Q&A with Mackoy Construction Director, Danny Bowers

05 December 2018

Danny Bowers has been Mackoy's Construction Director for the past two years, during which time he's become a frequent face on our clients' worksites as well as in our Hampshire head office. One of four members of our leadership team, Danny plays a key role in deciding our Site Manager of the Month Awards, alongside his day-to-day responsibilities overseeing the progression of our live groundworks contracts.

A keen boxing fan, when Danny isn't meeting with clients and site managers, around the five core counties Mackoy operate in, he spends his spare time with family, friends, and keeping fit.

We caught up with Danny, between site visits, for a quick Q&A to ask about his role overseeing Mackoy's construction operations, and what it takes to ascend to Construction Director status at a multi-million-turnover company.

Danny, describe what a typical working week at Mackoy is like for you…

A typical week for me involves meeting regularly with clients and managers for progress reports, setting target programs, and monitoring works to ensure we're hitting those targets, to a high standard safely. A key part of this involves checking that the manpower we've assigned for each project or groundworks contract is sufficient for what we're on site to deliver in the timeframe. I'm also regularly liaising with our contract managers, and MD Mike, on a daily basis to this effect too.

That's quite a week! What's the most challenging thing, would you say, about being a Construction Director?

There's never a problem but always a solution.

What training or experience do you need to become Construction Director at a groundworks company like Mackoy?

The main thing you need is many years experience and a good knowledge of all aspects of groundworks for the construction sector. On a personal level you also have to possess good people skills and project management capabilities too, as a large part of the role involves overseeing the delivery of our groundworks contracts, which can mean working on anything upwards of five live builds at a time. Ultimately, a Construction Director has to understand and manage the needs of everyone involved in the groundworks process, from the highest levels, right down to what's happening day-to-day on site.

If you could pick just one thing, what would you say is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Completing a project from start to finish, to a high standard, and impressing the client so much that they contract Mackoy on their next development.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about a career in groundworks?

Give 100% every day, whatever you choose to do in life, as you only get out what you're willing to put in.

What three things in life make you most happy?

On a personal level, spending time with my family (wife, kids and grandchildren). In a professional context, job satisfaction - knowing you're giving 100% each day.

Finally, who do you most admire in life and why?

My wife, because behind every good man is a good woman.
